Alimony

Alimony in Maryland is either “rehabilitative” or “indefinite,” and is only awarded in limited circumstances. Rehabilitative alimony is alimony in an amount and for a duration time to help enable the financially dependent spouse to become self-supporting. Indefinite alimony is for individuals who are unable to make reasonable progress toward being self-sufficient and/or if the standard of living between the parties will be unconscionably disparate. Indefinite alimony is awarded with no specific termination date. Unlike child support, in Maryland there are no calculable guidelines for alimony. Rather, the court takes multiple factors into consideration to determine the amount and duration of alimony. Factors include the age of the parties, length of the marriage, financial needs and resources of the parties, and circumstances that contributed to the breakup of the marriage.
